Great pictures--we are originally from Iowa but have lived in Gulf Breeze the last 10 years. Your blog came to me from a friend in Iowa--how ironic!

Wow! I am amazed at how the beach behind the boardwalk wasn't there in your pictures! I wouldn't want to be a shop owner with those waves so close. Great pictures, just remember to keep safe

Yo Bud; Great pictures. Thank God you are not in the
way of this hurricane! What in the world have we done
to piss off mother nature like this. Did we attack
nations that are chicken to attack us so mother nature
is taking up the cause?

I was out on the beach yesterday and I was truly awestruck by the size of the waves, 15 foot plus. They were breaking on the outer sandbars, 500-600 feet offshore.

The surf near shore boiled, and 30 mph winds sent sea foam flying like soapsuds. very alluring and frightening at the same time.

WOW !

Great pics. And to think Ike is not coming our way - he's still showing his strength to us.

Navarre Beach is pretty water-logged too. I just thankful we are only feeling the effects of the storm surge.

Thanks again for taking the time to post these pictures.

i don't live in p'cola anymore but i did for over 40 years. my family owned a small bar/grill on the original boardwalk(where tiffany's still stands)& i ran that for nearly 17years. it was called the outrigger.
i recall the old wooden fishing pier & the waves from hurricanes came over it on a regular basis(& knocked it down in sections repeatedly). the gulf side pics of yours are what i'd expect even from a drive by hurricane miles away.
however, your sound-side pics are chilling. trust me. the sound side NEVER flooded back in the day. ever. during the 1985 hurricane season, we had several storms come close(the infamously indecisive elena was the main one...TWO island evacuations for ONE storm)& the sound never came up the way it's doing in your pics for ike.
if you really want to scare yourself off that island, go back & check satillite pics from 20-30 years ago. i'm betting the width of the island has shrunk by 50%. as i'm seeing your pics, the central part of the island(where the man-made median road leading from the toll booths hits the boardwalk-mai-kai main island area) can't be more than a few hundred yards wide. another direct hit from a major storm(ivan/dennis-like or more powerful)& i'm finding it hard to imagination what will be left(other than the rotting blown out ruins of those high rise monstrosities on the east end).
hang in there. i enjoy your pics. it's nice to see my island again w/new eyes. but if a big one comes, run.

thanks. dan jones
